A racquet is four numbers: head size, strung weight, balance and swingweight. Learn to read those four and the marketing stops mattering. This guide uses only the specifications recorded on our own product pages — 38 frames with a sheet on file — so every figure is checkable on the listing it links to.

What our catalogue actually spans
Before you compare two frames, know the width of the field. Across the 38 racquets we have specced:
- Head size: 97 to 105 sq in. Smallest on file is the HEAD Speed Tour 2026 at 97. Largest are the HEAD Extreme Team 2026 and the Völkl Vöstra V4 at 105.
- Strung weight: 265 to 332 g. A 67 g spread — the single biggest difference between two racquets on the same wall.
- Swingweight: 290 to 333. How heavy it feels in motion, which is not the same as what the scale says.
- Stiffness (RA): 57 to 69. Softest recorded is the HEAD Gravity family at 57; stiffest are the Völkl Vöstra V5 and V7 at 69.
- String pattern: 16×18, 16×19, 16×20 and 18×20. 16×19 is by far the most common in our catalogue.
If a salesperson cannot tell you where a frame sits in those five ranges, they are selling you a paint job.
Read the ladder inside one family, not across brands
The useful comparison is almost never Wilson against Babolat. It is Team against MP against Pro inside one line, because that is where the maker has actually encoded a level. Here is the HEAD Speed 2026 line as our fields record it:
| Frame | Head | Strung | Balance | Swingweight | RA | Pattern |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Speed Team | 105 | 283 g | 5 pts HL | 303 | 62 | 16×19 |
| Speed MP L | 100 | 295 g | 3 pts HL | 316 | 61 | 16×19 |
| Speed MP | 100 | 318 g | 33.02 cm | 329 | 60 | 16×19 |
| Speed Tour | 97 | 323 g | 6 pts HL | 325 | 61 | 16×19 |
| Speed Pro | 100 | 326 g | 7 pts HL | 328 | 61 | 18×20 |
Read it top to bottom: the head shrinks, the weight climbs 43 g, the swingweight climbs 25 points, the balance moves from 5 to 7 points head-light, and only at the very top does the pattern close up to 18×20. That is one coherent progression, and the right frame for you is a rung on it, not a brand.
A note on balance, because we publish it two ways: points head-light are counted from the midpoint of the frame, so the centimetre figure depends on how long the frame is. The Speed Team is 27.4 in rather than 27, which is why its 5 points head-light reads 33.27 cm. The MP listing records only the centimetre figure.
16×19 or 18×20? What our numbers actually show
The denser 18×20 pattern never arrives alone. Two pairs in our catalogue show it, same family and same head size:
- HEAD Speed MP 2026 (16×19, 318 g strung, balance 33.02 cm) versus Speed Pro 2026 (18×20, 326 g, 31.98 cm).
- HEAD Gravity MP 2025 (16×20, 312 g strung, 3 pts HL, SW 323) versus Gravity Pro 2025 (18×20, 332 g, 7 pts HL, SW 329).
In both cases the tighter pattern comes bundled with 8 to 20 grams more weight and a markedly more head-light balance. So when someone tells you an 18×20 « gives more control », the honest version is: you are buying a heavier, more head-light racquet that also happens to have two more cross strings. If you cannot swing the weight, the pattern will not save you.
Which frame for which player
The three groups below are nothing but our own recorded strung weights, sorted. No level labels from any manufacturer, no opinions — sort by the number your arm will actually feel.

A frame appears above only where the fields that table needs are filled on its listing. The Babolat Pure Aero and Pure Aero 98 Gen 9, the Pure Aero Team 2026 and the HEAD Gravity Team 285g 2023 publish a swingweight and a balance but no strung weight on our pages, so they are not in the weight groups. Their full sheets are on their own product pages.
If your arm gives you trouble
Stiffness (RA) is the frame number that bears on comfort, and in our catalogue it runs from 57 to 69 — a wide gap. The HEAD Gravity line records the lowest figure we have on file, 57, across the Team, the MP L and the MP.
But be clear about the order of operations: for a sensitive arm, the string you put in the frame does more than the frame itself. Our Master Stringer's own model says so plainly — see the tennis strings guide. Buy the frame you can swing, then string it properly.
The tension range printed on the frame is not advice
Our own listings record 44–53 lb on the Babolat Pure Aero Team and Lite Gen 9, 47–57 lb on the Wilson Defyer 100, 48–57 lb across the HEAD 2025–2026 lines and 50–60 lb on the Völkl V-Cell 6 and Vöstra V5 and V7. Every one of those frames is 100 sq in. That is 16 lb of disagreement about the same size of string bed, which tells you those numbers are a legal envelope rather than a recommendation. Use our string tension calculator instead: six questions, and a number from the person who will be doing the job.
Juniors
A junior frame is chosen by the child's height and by grip size, not by the numbers above, and our junior listings do not carry a specification sheet — so this page quotes none. Bring the player in, or see the junior racquets page and call us.
Come and hit it before you buy it
Twenty-five points of swingweight is the difference between a racquet that works for you and one that hurts by the third set, and no table conveys it. Hold two frames from the same line, one after the other, and your forearm will tell you in seconds what this page takes a thousand words to explain. Every racquet bought here is strung for you at the tension you choose, at no extra charge.

Short answers
Which number matters most?
Swingweight. It is how heavy the frame feels while it is moving, which is when it matters. Ours run 290 to 333.
What should a returning player buy?
Something in the 265–289 g strung band with a swingweight near 300 and a head of 100 to 105 sq in. Eight frames in our catalogue fit.
Is 18×20 more control?
In our catalogue the 18×20 frames are also 8 to 20 g heavier and notably more head-light. You are buying the whole package, not just the pattern.
What stiffness if my elbow hurts?
The lowest we record is 57, on the HEAD Gravity line. Then fix the string, which matters more.
Can I compare across brands?
Only through the four numbers. Compare a Tour to a Tour, not a logo to a logo.
